The Department of Basic Education (DBE) publishes National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination papers and memoranda on its NSC examinations page. The archive includes papers from different years and exam sessions. Choose the subject and year you need, and check that the page is for the correct examination before downloading.
How to find the right matric paper
- Open the official DBE NSC examination archive.
- Select the year and exam session, such as November or May/June.
- Find your subject and read the paper label carefully.
- Download the question paper and its matching memorandum separately.
- Check the language and paper number. Some subjects have more than one paper, language version or addendum.
The DBE archive changes as new exam material is published. If you cannot see a paper for a current session, check the official page again later. Your school can also confirm which papers match your subject and curriculum.
How to use a past paper to improve
Do not start by reading the memo. First choose a section or set a timer and attempt the questions using only the materials allowed in an exam. If you are still learning a topic, work through one question at a time. When you are ready, attempt a full paper under timed conditions.
- Mark honestly: use the matching memo and award yourself marks only where your answer meets the marking guidance.
- Find the pattern: note whether the mistake came from a concept, calculation, missed instruction or time pressure.
- Repair one gap: review that topic with your notes or ask your teacher a specific question.
- Try a fresh question: check that you can apply the idea without looking at the memo.
Keep a short error list by subject. Revisit it a few days later. This turns each paper into a plan for what to practise next instead of a mark that tells you only what you already knew.
Which year should I practise?
Use more than one paper where possible. Start with a recent paper to see the current style, then use older papers for extra practice on topics still covered by your syllabus. Ask your teacher before relying on a much older paper, because formats, syllabuses and assessment guidance can change.
Past papers are practice material, not a promise that the same questions will appear again. Your main guide remains the work and exam guidance given by your school and the DBE.
Save papers for studying offline
If mobile data or connectivity is limited, download the files when you have access to Wi-Fi and save them in clearly named folders, for example “Mathematics · November 2025 · Paper 1” and “Mathematics · November 2025 · Memo 1”. Keep the paper and memo together so you do not practise against the wrong answers.
