NSFAS 2027: who qualifies and how to apply

The 2027 cycle dates were announced in the official government launch statement. Apply only through the official NSFAS website, nsfas.org.za, using the myNSFAS portal. Never pay anyone to apply for you, and never share your password or one-time PIN.

What is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is the government's bursary scheme for students at South Africa's public universities and public TVET colleges. For students who qualify, it can cover tuition and registration, accommodation or transport, learning materials and a living allowance.

Who qualifies for NSFAS in 2027?

• You're a South African citizen or permanent resident.
• Your combined household income is R350,000 a year or less.
• If you have a disability, the limit is R600,000 a year.
• If you or your household get a SASSA grant, you automatically meet the income requirement. You must still apply.
• You're studying, or plan to study, at a public university or TVET college. Private colleges aren't funded.
• Your qualification and institution meet the current NSFAS funding rules.

If your household earns between R350,001 and R600,000, you may qualify for the government's student loan for the "missing middle" instead of the bursary.

Documents to have ready

• Your ID (or birth certificate)
• ID copies for your parents, guardian or spouse
• Proof of income, if the application asks for it
• A completed disability form, if it applies to you
• Your own cellphone number and email address

How to apply, step by step

1. Go to nsfas.org.za and select myNSFAS.
2. Create an account, or sign in if you already have one.
3. Open the Apply tab and check that the form is for the 2027 academic year.
4. Answer every question honestly and upload clear copies of your documents.
5. Submit before 18 November 2026, and keep your reference number.
6. Sign in to myNSFAS regularly to track your status and respond if NSFAS asks for more documents.

Matric learners: apply now

You don't need your final results to apply. Grade 12 learners apply during their matric year, and funding is confirmed once you're accepted and registered at a public university or TVET college. Remember to also apply to the institutions themselves. NSFAS doesn't do that for you.

Common reasons applications are rejected

• Household income above the limit
• Missing, unclear or incorrect documents
• ID details that don't match Home Affairs records
• Applying for a private institution
• Already having a qualification funded by NSFAS
• Applying after the closing date

If you're rejected, you can appeal through myNSFAS within the appeal period shown on your status.

The closing date comes from the Minister of Higher Education's announcement on 18 September 2026 (SAnews). Funding outcomes are expected in December 2026. NSFAS can change its rules, so always confirm on nsfas.org.za.
